Richmond School District’s meal card spending nearly doubled, from $627,000 in 2022–2023 to $1.23 million in 2024–2025.

We all support helping families in need, and there are a variety of programs that do this. But when public spending increases substantially, we should expect clear answers about oversight.

When I asked how the program is managed, the response was a non-answer.

Supporting families and demanding accountability go hand in hand. Richmond deserves both.
