A 70-year-old Chinese Canadian senior was harassed and attacked twice within nine months on a pedestrian path in Richmond’s Seafair neighbourhood.
We, Advance Richmond City Council candidates Gary Law and Kevin Lai, together with School Trustee candidate Dean Billings, discuss senior safety, youth accountability, police investigations, and police-community trust.
The incidents involved spitting, filming, mocking Chinese speech, and spraying an unknown white liquid at the senior from behind, raising concerns about possible racial targeting.
The senior reported the second incident to the RCMP and later provided additional information. More than a month later, she discovered that the case had been closed on the same day it was reported.
As a former RCMP officer, I also share how I would have approached the investigation and how communication with the senior could have been handled differently.
